What Spares should I carry?Like any Electrical Equipment, Mobile Disco Equipment can go wrong. Maintaining and Servicing your gear is a must, however even serviced equipment can fail, so how can you prevent equipment failure from letting you and your client down?. Carrying at least some form of back up equipment goes without saying. Having spare equipment at home will be of little use if the equipment fails at 10pm at a venue 30 miles away!. But exactly what should you carry?. |

The A-Z of Starting a Mobile DiscoWhilst its true that disco equipment is becoming more and more affordable (especially from Thomann), there are still some worthwhile aspects to consider when choosing equipment for your show. Whilst many different brands, or manufacturers’ equipment will work with other brands, not all “types” of equipment go together. There are some potentially expensive pits to throw your money, and/or reputation into. This article is aimed at the newly starting DJ, but parts of it will also be of use to other, more established DJ’s. The article is split into sections for easy reading for those wishing to concentrate on just parts of a DJ set up. Here’s the first section now: |
Mobile DJ Tracklists / Forming a Music CollectionWhether you choose to use more conventional Vinyl or CD as a media for your mobile disco or choose to become one of the growing number of digital dj's then if you are about to start a mobile disco, you are going to need a very comprehensive music collection. |
Microphone TechniqueAlthough it sounds strange to you, to hear your own voice over the P.A, in fact it doesn't sound any different to the audience than if you were talking to them in normal conversation. |

How much should I charge for a DiscoMost D.J's tend to be Self Employed and working for themselves therefore they set their own fee for the entire function rather than pay themselves on an hourly basis. The the best way of finding out how much D.J's charge in your local area, is to phone a local D.J and ask how much it would cost you to book a disco |
Contract WritingWriting a contract is possibly one of the most important things, since you need to protect yourself and re-assure your client in one document. Remember that a contract has to remain unbiased to either party. A sample contract is provided below:- |

Denon DN-HD2500 Firmware UpgradeYou must ensure that nothing will turn the power off to your DN-HD2500 whilst the firmware upgrade is taking place, so... dont try upgrading it whilst in a venue with a noise limiter fitted or when running from a generator, or on a car power invertor etc... |
Amplifier Output ValuesAmplifier output power is measured in WATTS, and you should only pay attention to the RMS Power Specification of any Amplifier. The amount of watts which you get from an Amplifier depends on the amount of load which you connect to it. The Load is often refered to as impedance and measured in Ohms. |
5 pin XLR WiringThere is no doubt that the decision to move over from 3 pin to 5 pin XLR connectors by some manufacturers, has caused some confusion amongst DJ's. The excuse for moving over to 5 pin XLR's is that some users were mistaking the DMX In / Out sockets on lighting effects for audio, and connecting them to Balanced sockets on Mixers!. I suppose they have a point, I've known DJ's to do this before!. |

| Hi I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on transmitting music from one room to another. I'm looking to have music in the dance room and also at a lower volume in a bar downstairs. The idea being that those downstairs can hear the kind of music that's playing upstairs and encourage more people onto the dance floor. Two questions: 1 - Is it legal or would we become a pirate radio station 2 - What kit would be best to do this? Would the domestic kit you use to transmit audio and video upstairs from your Sky box do or is their something more robust? In case you're wondering, cabling isn't an option. The distance as the crow flies (assuming it could fly through concrete) is quite short. Approx. 20 metres. Also, it's not a permanent set up as we only hire the venue for the night. Hope some one can help. Thanks Matt |
